Make an Annual Checklist for Your Home

Making an annual checklist will help to forestall future trouble for your home.  Of course, you don’t need to make the checkup all at once.  But at some point during the year you should inspect all parts of your home and correct problems that exist or may soon arise. Among the more important things to note and do are the following:

  • Replace damaged roofing materials. Carefully examine  valley flashings for leaks.
  • Cut off weak tree limbs overhanging the roof.
  • Clean gutters and leaders. Rehang any that have become damaged.
  • Secure your satellite dish.
  • Secure loose siding. Fill cracks and open joints with calking compound.
  • Replace rotten wood wherever you find it.
  • Point up cracks in masonry.
  • Scrub efflorescence from masonry surfaces.
  • Stop leaks through foundation walls.
  • Look for termites.
  • Make sure that rain water drains rapidly away from the foundation walls and does not flood areaways.
  • Repair screens and storm sash.
  • Grease garage doors.
  • Clean out septic tank.
  • Close and drain outdoor faucets and pipelines.
  • Have chimney and furnace and water-heater flues cleaned.
  • Fix doors and windows that stick and don’t close.
  • Fill holes, cracks and dents in interior walls.
  • Repaint walls, trim.
  • Refinish floors.
  • Replace defective switches.
